Why Does the Govt Ban Even Balanced Information?
There’s been a lot of talk about the banning by the Thai government of even the most balanced (and arguably, the most forgiving) advertisement produced by the “Positive Network.” The ad is by no means pro-Red Shirt or Pro-Yellow Shirt, it offers zero message of action against the government, and can be seen as successfully arguing for a middle ground in an extremely difficult situation.
In fact, it even argues that “no one is to blame” for the murder of 90 people – which seems like a message that the government would like to spread. Nevertheless, I liked the genuine good intention and thought behind the ad. I do think it hit on important topics, such as the national unity required to move forward (which, naturally, might require elections and accountability for the violence). And I also think that it is a great tragedy that even these messages are deemed unacceptable by Abhisit’s Orwellian CRES.
I look forward to a time when the powers in Thailand can handle this level of debate.
